Sunday Sermon - Pride - George

Pride

Obadiah was a prophecy about God's judgement on Edom. Edom was on an elevated land and it gave them an advantage in terms of war.

Though you soar aloft like the eagle, thoh your next is set among the stars, from there I will bring you dow declare the Lord (Verse 4)

Edom's position

Edom was unique because it was

  1. Prosperous Nation
  2. Popular Nation
  3. Perceptive Nation
  4. Powerful nation

Prosperous Nation

People take pride in our position in society. And this position is dangerous because pride brings your down.

God is not interested in our position, but God is interested in fruitfulness for greater glory

Popular Nation

People want to be associated with powerful people

Perceptive Nation - Wise

Will I not on that day, declares the Lord, destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of Mount Esau? (Verse 8)

Powerful Nation

And your mighty men shall be dismayed, O Teman, so that every man from Mount Eau will be cut off by slaughter (Verse 9)

Lessons

  • It disoriented her mond thinking all these things came be be because of ehr own ability, skill, and knowledge. But she was wrong. All the things came to be by God's grace along and God can take it away anytime which He did
  • It deceived her heart, feeling she could be secure, safe and strong because of our protections, prosperity, popularity
  • It derailed her conduct acting arrogant and abusive against God's people. Her violen conduct against Israel did not escape God's eyes. When she boasted of the misfortune of Israel, God prepared her great fall.
  • Law of consequences is true. There is no escape because God will hold accountable for what they have done. He will judge the proud and bring them down to bring them back to their senses.
  • For in our un-guarded season there is an Edom in all of us

Warnings

  • We need to redirect our hearts to God alone so tht we will not fall into a false sense of security from all these temporal things
  • We need to recalibrate our walk and remain obedient to God. Pride comes because it disorients our mind, deceives our heart and derails our conduct. But for those who would humby repent, God will forgive and restore
  • Indeed "Saviors shall go up to the Mount Zion to rule Mount Esau and the king shall be the Lords"

Discussion point: Pride leads to

  • Disobedience (1 Samuel 15:23)
  • Hypocrisy instead of authentic living (Proverbs 12:9,
  • Judgemental Spirit instead of Love (1 Corinthians 8:1)
  • Boasting instead of meekness (Proverbs 27:2; @ Corinthians 12:5-6)
  • Isolation instead of community (Proverbs 1:1; Romans 12:16)
