The family of God
The family of God is a provides security for it's members. This security brings joy and happiness.... there is laughter and peace. The security is because God is actively protecting and building this family. See the origin of the family in Genesis.
Verse: Genesis 12:1-3
1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.
2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others.
3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.
Abraham was part of his father's house and had a family. He had his routine of worshiping other gods. But one day God came to him. He told him that he intended to build a family through him. But this required that he leave his father's house. And God intended this family be a blessing to others.
Hence the invitation to join the family is open and the requirement is very simple. All you need to do is accept and have faith
Verse: Galatians 3:7
7 The real children of Abraham, then, are those who put their faith in God.
We are not part of the family as a slave but rightful heir as children. See verse below
Verse: John 1:12
12 But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.
Here are some points on the church
- Church begins at home
- Character of a Godly home
- Teaching your children
- One family
- Church is the fellowship at the table
Church begins at home
The early church didn't really have buildings so they gathered in their homes. The individual family is the church. Here are references
- .... and the church that meets in her house (Colossians 4:15)
- Also give my greetings to the church that meets in their home (Romans 16:5)
Character of a Godly home
The character at home should reflect when you come to church. And when this happens there is a joy. See some characteristics of a godly home
1 Timothy 5:1
1 Never speak harshly to an older man,[a] but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father. Talk to younger men as you would to your own brothers.
2 Treat older women as you would your mother, and treat younger women with all purity as you would your own sisters.
There is respect when we deal with other people in our family
Teaching your children
God has commanded for us to teach the children. The instruction is to happen repeatedly and consistently
Verse: Deuteronomy 6:7
7 Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up
One family
God has called us to be one. There are no schism in His church
Verse: Ephesians 4:4
4 For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future.
Further God shows no partiality between people
Verse: Deuteronomy 10:17-19
17 “For the Lord your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords. He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God, who shows no partiality and cannot be bribed.
18 He ensures that orphans and widows receive justice. He shows love to the foreigners living among you and gives them food and clothing.
Some people would like to be isolate and detach ourselves from the people of God. We are called to dispel this spirit. See how Mordecai brought Esther home as an orphan but made her, his daughter
Verse: Esther 2:7
7 This man had a very beautiful and lovely young cousin, Hadassah, who was also called Esther. When her father and mother died, Mordecai adopted her into his family and raised her as his own daughter.
The uncle came in a took the role of the father so much so that even after Esther became queen, he constantly inquired of her well being and gave advice
1 Thessalonians 2:7,11
7 As apostles of Christ we certainly had a right to make some demands of you, but instead we were like children[a] among you. Or we were like a mother feeding and caring for her own children.
11 And you know that we treated each of you as a father treats his own children.
The apostles acted like mothers and fathers to the church to drive our the spirit of orphans. Are there people who will rise up and take the place of fathers to drive this spirit away?
Church is the fellowship at the table
The blessing of God is the that we are called his children and we have the right call him Father
Verse: Romans 8:15
15 So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children.[a] Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”
See how Jesus was eager to have this kind of fellowship. See the verse below
Verse: Luke 22:14-15
14 When the time came, Jesus and the apostles sat down together at the table.[a]
15 Jesus said, “I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins.
The Passover meal was the last meal that Jesus had and his deepest love was felt here.
Conclusion
Let us remember that we are one family. If we function as one, then there will be no enemy that will be able to stand against us.
