Discerning the Voice of God
Our faith in God grows as we journey through our spiritual life. The growing of faith requires different inputs. One of the inputs is Hope. The other is Voice of God.
Verse: Romans 10:17
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
And when the Voice of God comes through in our times of uncertainty, we can either choose to hear God over the voices of our circumstances.
Verse: Hebrews 3:15-16
15 As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
16 For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses?
The voice of God came in a time of uncertainty. The people of Israel didn't know where they were going and hence the frustration. They choose to hear their internal frustration over the Voice of God.
So let us choose to listen to God over the other voices in our lives. And the Word of God will surprise you because of the sheer power within the Word of God
Verse: Hebrews 4:12
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Here are some pointers
- God really speaks
- God speaks through His Spirit
- Pay attention to His Voice
God really speaks
The Word of God is manifested in different forms.
- Jesus Christ: Logos
- Scripture
- The Now Word of God: Rhema
Jesus Christ: Logos
The word of God manifested physically is Jesus Christ
Verse: Revelation 19:11-13
11 Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in[a] blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God.
Scripture
The written form of Word of God is Scripture. The written form of God provides guidelines in our Spiritual journey
Verse: 2 Timothy 3:16
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
The Now Word of God: Rhema
There may be times when direction from the Scripture will be supplemented by the Now Word of God. This word is required for everyday spiritual journey
Verse: Matthew 4:4
4 But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
God Speaks through His Spirit
The realm in which God operates is in the Spirit. Hence to hear God, we need to be in tune with the Spirit of God. Adam was in that realm and he was able to hear God.
Verse: Genesis 3:8
8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
The fall put this distance between God and man. And ever since the fall, God is attempting to make this connection through the Spirit of God. And so we have the promise of the Comforter... the advocate... the Holy Spirit
Verse: John 6:63
63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[a] and life.
But if you don't have the Holy Spirit in you, you will not hear him.
Verse: 1 Corinthians 2:14
14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
God wants to make this connection so much that the abundance of the Word of God in our lives is compared to the dew, rain or showers .... something that life on earth needs everyday.
Verse: Deuteronomy 32:1-2
1 “Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak, and let the earth hear the words of my mouth.
2 May my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill as the dew, like gentle rain upon the tender grass, and like showers upon the herb.
Pay attention to His voice
It is important to pay close attention to the Voice of God because in our journey of life, we have inputs from different voice sources. If we don't pay close attention, the Voice of God will get drowned out
Verse: Exodus 15:26
26 saying, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer.”
Here are possible moments that you need to pay attention
- Inspired moments in Worship
- Dreams and Visions
- Signs
Inspired moments in Worship
Here is moment when the prophet seeking God's word has an Inspired moment in Worship.
Verse: 2 Kings 3:15-16
15 But now bring me a musician.” And when the musician played, the hand of the Lord came upon him.
16 And he said, “Thus says the Lord, ‘I will make this dry streambed full of pools.’
Dreams and Vision
We often dismiss dreams. But if you pay attention, you might hear God's Word.
Verse: Job 33:16
16 then he opens the ears of men and terrifies[a] them with warnings,
Signs
God is disparately trying to speak to us and sometimes he speaks through signs.
Verse: Isaiah 7:11
11 “Ask a sign of the Lord your[a] God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.”
Conclusion
We need to be in tune with the Holy Spirit so we can hear the Voice of God. Else we might miss the sound of the low whisper of God
Verse: 1 Kings 19:12
12 And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper
