 Coming to your senses

Verse: Luke 15:17

“When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger!

God has put eternity in the hearts of man. There is a constant search in the heart of man to connect to he creator God. But often times, we ignore the call of God in our heart. We need to reach in and come to our senses. We need that moment of realisation.

God may in his goodness, brings about situation in our lives, to sensitise us to this realisation. The way of life may be hard and bitter. If we resist God, our conclusion of life is meaninglessness. What can we do to protect ourselves from meaninglessness. Here are three points

  • Affluence and riches
  • Spirit of this age
  • Disappointment/Discouragement

Affluence and Riches

The young man in the story came from a rich family. This growing up experience shielded him from learning important life lessons. He might have even resisted learning as well.

Verse: Jeremiah 22:21

I warned you when you were prosperous, but you replied, ‘Don’t bother me.’ You have been that way since childhood— you simply will not obey me!

This not happened this prodigal son. But this happened to David. David came to a point in life where he was successful. And he ignored what was the purpose of the life.

Verse: 2 Samuel 11:1

In the spring of the year, when kings normally go out to war, David sent Joab and the Israelite army to fight the Ammonites. They destroyed the Ammonite army and laid siege to the city of Rabbah. However, David stayed behind in Jerusalem.

The story goes on where David schemes, lies and sinned. Affluence had got to him!!! Where is the man who said that I would fight a giant for the name of the Lord?

And fortunately, David responded positively to correction. The question to ask is whether we will respond positively when God reaches out. Will our repentance

Verse: Jeremiah 3:10

But despite all this, her faithless sister Judah has never sincerely returned to me. She has only pretended to be sorry. I, the Lord, have spoken!”

Spirit of this age

This Spirit of the age is nothing but reckless and wild living

Verse: Luke 15:13

“A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and moved to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money in wild living.

God is calling us to be live carefully.

Verse: 1 Peter 5:8

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

The kind of living is detrimental not only to individuals but this could also bring down a kingdom.

Kingdome Israel: Israel disintegrated because of the lifestyle that strayed away from Word of God

Verse: Judges 21:25

In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.

Kingdom Babylon: Babylon disintegrated on that very night

Verse: Daniel 5:30‭-‬31

30 That very night Belshazzar, the Babylonian king, was killed.

31 And Darius the Mede took over the kingdom at the age of sixty-two.

What happened on that night? Belshazzar threw a wild party in keeping with his wild living.

What is God urging us to do?

Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:6

So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.

Disappointment/ Discouragement

Discouragement warps our thinking as in the case of the prodigal son

Verse: Luke 15:14

About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve.

Out of this starvation (Discouragement), he gives himself to the wrong people. We settle for what ever we get.... relationship, connections etc

Verse: 1 Corinthians 15:33

Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for “bad company corrupts good character.”

Out of this starvation, we give our selves to Spiritual oppression. He gave himself to feeding the pigs

Verse: Luke 15:15

He persuaded a local farmer to hire him, and the man sent him into his fields to feed the pigs.

Out of his starvation, we lusted for more and more and anything that came his wa

Verse: Luke 15:16

The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything.

Coming to his senses

Let us all come to our senses and run to the Father

Verse: Luke 15:18

I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you,
