Theology of the body
God created man and woman in His image. And Jesus died on the cross so that we can be restored to what God wants us to be. We all fell short because of the fall. And hence Paul is pleading with the church to worship God with your bodies.
Verse: Romans 12:1
[1] And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.
Because of the fall, we tend to do the wrong. These are the works of the body (flesh)
Verse: Galatians 5:19-21
[19] When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures,
[20] idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division,
[21] envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
And hence the requirement for living sacrifice of the body. This sacrifice that is a daily process.
What is the body?
The body is a container that holds the spirit. We know that the being of God existed before it manifested as human (flesh).
Verse: John 1:14
[14] So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.
Similarly for man, the spirit of man is housed in a human body.
Again, God chose a body to be revelaed to mankind. This is mentioned again in Hebrews.
Verse: Hebrews 10:5
[5] That is why, when Christ came into the world, he said to God, “You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings. But you have given me a body to offer.
And if spirit seeks shelter in a body, this also applies to evil spirits as well.
Verse: Matthew 12:44
[44] Then it says, ‘I will return to the person I came from.’ So it returns and finds its former home empty, swept, and in order.
And if the spirit seeks shelter in a body, this also applies to the Spirit of God. God resides within us.... among us. Our bodies is the temple of God.
Hence our bodies are relevant in the spiritual realm. And hence several acts of what we do in worship is relevant. We sing, shout, dance in praise to God. This act plays a very important role in spiritual realm. We also fast and pray. And perhaps we can't see what transpires in the spirit. We know this happens from the stories of Daniel, Job etc.
Consequently if we display acts that are contrary to the Spirit (deeds of the flesh), the resulting consequences are also a natural outcome. So we need to watch out and present our body as living sacrifice.
Verse: 1 Corinthians 9:27
[27] I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.
The body needs to be disciplined. The body is a good slave and not a good master. Hence we need to put that effort to bring it to subjection.
What is the purpose of the Body?
Verse: 1 Corinthians 6:13
[13] You say, “Food was made for the stomach, and the stomach for food.” (This is true, though someday God will do away with both of them.) But you can’t say that our bodies were made for sexual immorality. They were made for the Lord, and the Lord cares about our bodies.
