Warning against Soulishness
Soulishness could be defined as somethig that appeals to our senses. And when the appeal goes out of our control we are tempted. And temptation leads to sin
Verse: Genesis 3:2-6
[2] “Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied.
[3] “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’”
[4] “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman.
[5] “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”
[6] The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.
In the garden of Eden, the devil appealed to the senses and lead Adam and Eve into sin.
We have five senses. Here are pointers
Sense of Touch
In our interaction and fellowship, the sense of touch helps us communicate good and bad. We can encourage others through this touch senses. And we can be affected when it goes wrong.
1 Corinthians 7:1
[1] Now regarding the questions you asked in your letter. Yes, it is good to abstain from sexual relations.
We are to recognize what is good and bad
Verse: Hebrews 5:14
[14] Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.
We need to train ourselves to recognize good and bad, right and wrong. This trainng requires the understanding what is good. And only the Word of God sets the standards. And every action needs to be compared to this.
Let us expose our senses to the Word of God more than the experiences of the world.
Sense of Hearing
What we hear is also a lense of types, of the way we see the world. King Saul and his army saw Goliath as a threat.
Verse: 1 Samuel 17:10-11
[10] I defy the armies of Israel today! Send me a man who will fight me!”
[11] When Saul and the Israelites heard this, they were terrified and deeply shaken.
But David listened to God speaking
Verse: 1 Samuel 17:45
[45] David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
What are we listening to today? What is the music we listen to? What the movies we watch? All of this affects the way we think.
We need time alone with God, with singing and praying .... and perhaps for a long time. Just like Elijah who travelled to Horeb to hear the still small whisper of God.
Positive Experiences on our senses when directed by God.
John in Patmos in Revelation 1:10
[10] It was the Lord’s Day, and I was worshiping in the Spirit. Suddenly, I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet blast.
Simeon in the temple when he saw baby Jesus in Luke 2:29-30
[29] “Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace, as you have promised.
[30] I have seen your salvation
Conclusion
Let us train ourselves to hear more of God rather than the World so that we may dicern right from wrong.
