Parable of the Mustard Seed
The church is to be prepared for the fullness of the Kingdom of God is to be fully established. And it is never fully established unil Christ has full authority and Heaven and Earth
Verse: Ephesians 1:10
And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth.
Here is the passage for today study
Verse: Matthew 13:31-32
31 Here is another illustration Jesus used: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed planted in a field.
32 It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of garden plants; it grows into a tree, and birds come and make nests in its branches.”
Jesus is the one that sows the seed into our hearts. The field is where the seeds fall on. And the field represents the earth. There are three things we can learn
- Insignificant Beginning
- Warning against one's own kingdom
- Beware of negative influences
Insignificant Beginning
The mustard seed is the smallest. But it grew up to be a large tree in the garden. This is similar to
- The growth of the church grew in-significantly until it filled the earth.
- And the insignificant blessing in your life may not mean much to you. But God has a plan.
Here is another verse that cautions against quick and pompous beginnings
Verse: Proverbs 13:11
11 Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.
And so it is important to be careful what we sow
Verse: Galatians 6:7
7 Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.
Joseph rise to the second in command over Egypt had his insignificant beginnings. But he didn't take short cuts. He maintained that it was important to be a person with integrity rather than quick gains.... to be faithful instead of pleasure.
Verse: Genesis 39:8-9
8 But Joseph refused. “Look,” he told her, “my master trusts me with everything in his entire household.
9 No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.”
And while being faithful, the road may lead you down temporarily. But stick to the truth
Verse: Genesis 39:20
20 So he took Joseph and threw him into the prison where the king’s prisoners were held, and there he remained.
Warning against one's own kingdom
God's Kingdom cannot be stopped even if you are seeking building your own. Nebuchadnezzar was one who attempted this and fell miserably.
Verse: Daniel 4:14
14 The messenger shouted, “Cut down the tree and lop off its branches! Shake off its leaves and scatter its fruit! Chase the wild animals from its shade and the birds from its branches.
The root of this thinking is pride. Here is a further warning.
Verse: Deuteronomy 8:14
14 Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.
Beware of negative influences
While we grew strong under the shade of the Kingdom of God, there will be people who will be drawn to us...... the birds will flock
Verse: Ezekiel 31:6
The birds nested in its branches, and in its shade all the wild animals gave birth. All the great nations of the world lived in its shadow.
And when this flocking happens, we should be the influencers and not influenced. We draw from God and that should flow to the people who are under our care.
Conclusion
There is no way other than choosing to be part of the Kingdom of God.... where God is honoured above all. Let us be on God's side and put bury our own agenda. Our thoughts should be all about the glory and the honour of the Kingdom of God.
And look again.... the great mustard tree that represents the Kingdom of God started out as the despised tree where Jesus hung on and died.
