SundaySermon - Prince - Resurrection
Resurrection
This event in history is the most important event. It is all the more important for those who believe in Christ because the resurrection is the evidence of this belief.
Verse: 1 Corinthians 15:20
[20] But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died.
This event spurred the apostles and the Christians of today to take this truth to the ends of the church.
Let us go through why the resurrection is an uncontested event in history. This is uncontested because of this passage - 1 Corinthians 15. This is the early credel tradition. How early was this? This is dated back to 31 AD as per Bart Ehrman (Historian). This is within the first year of Jesus crucifixion.
Compare this with people who existed in history - Alexander the Great. His writing (evidence) was dated 450 years after his death. And this source for Alexander the Great is credible. Hence the credibility of 1 Corinthians 15 far superseds other writings of the time.
When evidence is evaluated, the different sources is compared. If the sources contradicts each other, the event can be dismissed as myth. Compare this with the Resurrection.... 1 Corinthians talk of 500 people who witnessed the resurrected Jesus. This absolutely trounces any debate otherwise.
Besides the Bible, the resurrection of Jesus was mentioned by Josephus, Fleegan (?) etc
What happened as a result of the Resurrection?
The death of Jesus meant he descended to the earth
Verse: Ephesians 4:9
[9] Notice that it says “he ascended.” This clearly means that Christ also descended to our lowly world.
This lowering caused him to take the key of death
Verse: Revelation 1:18
[18] I am the living one. I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.
And because of this victory, every knee will bow to him.
Verse: Philippians 2:10
[10] that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
And this victory is to bring this resurrection to all who believe in Jesus
Verse: 1 Corinthians 15:54-55
[54] Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory.
[55] O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”
This victory is shared with everyone who believes. He makes us sit with Jesus
Verse: 1 Corinthians 15:57
[57] But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ
Again, Jesus is sharing this victory
Verse: Ephesians 2:6
[6] For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus.
How do we respond to what Jesus did?
We live a different life altogether, controlled by the Holy Spirit and not by our sinful nature.
Verse: Romans 8:9-11
[9] But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)
[10] And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God.
[11] The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.
