Emotional Transformation - How do we achieve this? There is so much of depression, suicidal tendencies in our society today. Where do we see ourselves in matters of Emotional Transformation.
The heart is the seat of emotions, affections, sensibilities, desire. passions. And where should our heart be as per Jesus.
Verse: Matthew 22:37
[37] Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’
When our heart is not in right place, there is pain in the heart of God. God feels emotions as well. The bible, on several occassion show Jesus moving with compassion when he sees the hungry crowd.
And hence our emotions is because we are created in the image of God. We display the image that we are created to be. However because of sin, the heart of man is wicked.
Verse: Jeremiah 17:9
[9] “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?
Three points on emotional transformation
- Guard your emotions
- Cleanse your emotions
- Trust in the tender mercies of God
Guard your emotions
We need to be vigilant and guard our emotions
Verse: Proverbs 4:23
[23] Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
The story of Samson was on where he was not careful with his emotions. He gave himself freely and women swayed his resolve, in his commitment to God.
Verse: Judges 16:16
[16] She tormented him with her nagging day after day until he was sick to death of it.
How does this story affect us? We need to guard our heart, starting with our thought life.
Verse: Matthew 5:28
[28] But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
The more we exposed to wrong thoughts, it will get a hold of us until there is no return.
Emotional Priorities: In a family situation, a husband is called to love his wife. Love is not due to parents. We are called to honor our Parents but love belongs to your wife. And God is due both honor and love
Cleanse your emotions
We can never know ourselves completely. We may reason and act out of good intentions (something that comes from rational arguements). But beware, there may be a deceptive element. The deep intentions... only God knows.
Verse: Acts 15:9
[9] He made no distinction between us and them, for he cleansed their hearts through faith.
The arguments surrounding the existence of God is made rationally as claimed by atheist. However God makes the case on why people say that there is no God. Their intent is to live without rules and follow their own corrupt ways.
Trust in the tender mercies of God
This will bring healing to your emotions ... emotions may be yoked to trauma, pain, hurt or wrong people. Invite God to heal you.
The centurion who was overseeing the death of Jesus... was probably emotionless. He had seen many people crucified. He cared less for anyone who he was killing. However when Jesus gave up his life, he responded....
"Truely he was the Son of God"
Let us come to Jesus to bring our healing.
