SundaySermon - Prince - Renewed Mind
Renewed Mind
Verse: Romans 12:2
[2] Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
The renewal of the mind is changing the way we think. God has given us salvation in our hearts. And this should cause a difference in the way we think.
Caleb was one person who had the renewed mind. The mindset caused him to encourage people inspite of negative report from his other companions
Verse: Numbers 13:30
[30] But Caleb tried to quiet the people as they stood before Moses. “Let’s go at once to take the land,” he said. “We can certainly conquer it!”
Caleb's other companions said that there was no hope.... the grasshopper mindset
Verse: Numbers 13:33
[33] We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. Next to them we felt like grasshoppers, and that’s what they thought, too!”
Humanly speaking, we tend to make our problems bigger than it is. And hence bad news spreads faster. But with a renewed mind, we can respond to life situations differently. This is the God confidence... not self confidence.
Some pointers
- Destroy certain Thoughts
- Setting your Mind
- God's Word
Destroy certain Thoughts
Verse: 2 Corinthians 10:3-4
[3] We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do.
[4] We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.
The thoughts we are talking about is described as "stronghold". It takes equal or more strength to offset this. And hence you need the renewed mindset. Caleb saw the same situation as the enemy as "helpless prey"
Verse: Numbers 14:9
[9] Do not rebel against the Lord, and don’t be afraid of the people of the land. They are only helpless prey to us! They have no protection, but the Lord is with us! Don’t be afraid of them!”
What happened to people who spoke unbelief..... They didn't enter the promised land.
Hence we need to destroy every thought that comes from human thinking. The word used here is to take "captive".
Verse: 2 Corinthians 10:5
[5] We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.
The act of taking captive is more than likely to be violent. And Jesus displayed this firmness
Verse: Matthew 16:23
[23] Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”
Setting your Mind
Colossians 3:1-2
[1] Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand.
[2] Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.
Our mind needs to be set on things that are above. .... above mean the place where Christ is seated.
Stephen was one person who stood boldly in the face of death. This is because His gaze was heaven bound
Verse: Acts 7:55
[55] But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand.
Verse: Isaiah 26:3
[3] You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
And if we don't set on our mind on things above, then here we are tossed about and they don't receive the promise of God
Verse: James 1:6-7
[6] But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.
[7] Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
If we could only steady our mind on the Lord, then we will receive from God, the abundant life that He promised each one of us.
God's Word
Renewal of the mind is establishment of framework of our thought process. It is not changing one thought. It is how we make decisions in different situations that we are faced with.
And only God can change our thought process. The the Word changes us. And hence we need concentrate on God's Word
Verse: Psalms 1:2
[2] But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.
When Life throws difficult times, a renewed mind sees this as an opportunity
It takes a lot to see our difficult times differently. We need to move from childish understanding and see things the way God sees our situations
Verse: 1 Corinthians 14:20
[20] Dear brothers and sisters, don’t be childish in your understanding of these things. Be innocent as babies when it comes to evil, but be mature in understanding matters of this kind.
