Camp22 - Rajiv - Being a good Father

 Being a good Father

Introduction

Verse: Psalms 119:9

How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word.

There was a young man ... Daniel. Daniel purposed in his heart that he wouldn't sin.... it means that he made up his mind not to sin even before the situation presented itself.

The other young man was Joseph. He was serving at Potipher's house and was being tempted. But he ran away from the situation of temptation.

As young men, we need to purposeful about our vision and the future. Find the purpose of life.

  • Personality: It is important to understand personality type..... you you like being around people or along
  • Potential: Find out your potential.... Is it coding, leading, etc. Paul encouraged Timothy to "fan into flame the gift...". This means that your potential needs to be constantly sharpened
  • Passion: Something that you love to do. You don't mind doing it even if you don't get anything
  • Problem: What is the problem you want to solve. If you are moved by people going hungry.... then it is on you to do something else.

As young men, one of the most important decision is choosing the life-partner. Take time.... find out what God wants. Don't rush into it because you must carefully consider this decision.

Make it your ambition to honour God

Seven Habits of Godly Father

There is direct co-relation between crime rate and fatherlessness. So Godly father is a necessity.

The seven roles are

  • To be the Priest of the house
  • Godly Fathers are servant Leaders
  • Godly Fathers are involved
  • Godly Fathers are CJO (Chief Joy officer)
  • Godly Fathers provide for the family
  • Godly Fathers draws boundaries
  • Godly Fathers lead by example

To be the Priest of the house

The father is responsible for the spiritual wellness of the home. As men, there are different challenges in the office. But this responsibility takes priority

Verse: Deuteronomy 6:7

Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.

Fathers best teaching is when the children see if you are living out the Bible. That is the most effective learning

Godly Fathers are servant leaders

Follow Jesus example.... He washed the feet of his disciple. As fathers, we can abuse this authority, but we are called to serve

Godly Fathers are involved

Involvement means you are deliberate about conversations with your family, children. You need to support your family in there success and failures.

Godly Fathers are CJO (Chief Joy officer)

When the dad enters the house, there should be joy, laughter.

Verse: Colossians 3:19‭,21

19 Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly.

21 Fathers, do not aggravate your children, or they will become discouraged.

Different ways of bring joy is encouraging, appreciating. When the children are encouraged they end up doing well.

What we speak to our children sticks to their mind..... you need to call them champions.

Godly Fathers provide for the family

Fathers should provide for all the needs of the family. All the needs includes provision and  emotional needs.

Verse: 1 Timothy 5:8

But those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers.

You cannot solve an emotional needs by material needs. Some fathers only provide and spoil their children.

To do this..... Fathers need to be good listeners.

Godly Fathers draws boundaries

Boundaries means discipline. Authentic love is best for the good of the one that is loved

Verse: Hebrews 12:9‭-‬11

9 Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever?

10 For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness.

11 No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.

Godly Fathers lead by example

Children imitate and so follow the example of Christ. That is the way to show them to Christ.

Verse: 1 Corinthians 11:1

And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.

When they see you treating your wife well, the children grow up to treat their wifes well etc.....

Noteworthy men

We have examples of good men. We need to study their lives and imbibe the good.

  • Paul: Paul discipled people, built churches. You need to be that mentor
  • Barnabas: Barnabas was the encourager. You need to be that encourager
  • Timothy: Timothy was mentored by Paul. You need to invest in other people and build other people
