Double Portion
Introduction
Here are some verses where the Bible mentions a double measure of what God is intending to give. The double portion comes to us as a result of position, situation, actions, prayer.... etc
Verse: Deuteronomy 21:17
17 He must acknowledge the son of his unloved wife as the firstborn by giving him a double share of all he has. That son is the first sign of his father’s strength. The right of the firstborn belongs to him.
NOTE: This was the right of the first born son. This is an entitlement because of the position. Do you understand your position in Christ Jesus?
Verse: 1 Samuel 1:5
5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb.
NOTE: The husband gave double portion to his wife. This is an entitlement because of intense love. Do you understand God's love for you?
Verse: Isaiah 61:7
7 Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance. And so you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours.
NOTE: God gives double portion to make up for a situation of shame that we may have brought on ourselves. Do you understand that when God restores, he restores in double portion?
Verse: Job 42:10
10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before.
NOTE: God gives double portion to Job. This entitlement came as the result of his prayer for undeserving friends. Are you ready to show mercy to undeserving people?
Verse: Revelation 18:6
6 Give back to her as she has given; pay her back double for what she has done. Pour her a double portion from her own cup.
NOTE: God judges in double portion as well. If your deeds are evil, the double portion of judgement is reserved for you as well. Be warned!!!
Verse: 2 Kings 2:9
9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?” “Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied.
NOTE: The double portion was achieved because of a prayer that Elisha made to Elijah. Are we desperate in our prayers
With the above verses as an introduction, here are some pitstops on the journey to receive your Double Portion. (This is mirrored to the journey that Israel took to received their double portion - promised land)
- Gilgal - Being separated
- Bethel - Presence of God
- Jericho - Walk by Faith
- Jordan - Death and Resurrection
Gilgal - Being separated
Verse: Joshua 5:8-9
8 And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed.
9 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place has been called Gilgal to this day
Circumcision spiritually speaking is being separated for God. So the first step is coming to a place of consecration and change (new beginning)
Bethel - Presence of God
Bethel means "house of God". Jacob discovered Bethel as mentioned in the passage Genesis 28:10-22. This discovery brought the following in Jacob
- It marked the first beginnings of knowledge and understanding about God
- Connection with God
One you get a hold of the Presence of God, you pursuit of God is the only thing that matters.
Verse: Psalm 27:4-6
4 One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.
Get a hold of your Bethel!!!
Jericho - Walk by Faith
Passage: Joshua 6
The walls of Jericho were almost impossible to penetrate. Not only was the walls impenetrable, their evil practices of the Moon Cult made this a spiritual battle. The spiritual battle had to be won first and so they walked around the wall for 7 days before even raising a sword.
The walk of complete surrender and faith broke through the spiritual battle and this cascaded into the physical realm. So this is how this applies to your life. Your double portion first comes in the area of spiritual (in the area of Faith). This overflow burst through becomes evident in the physical realm
Jordan - Death and Resurrection
Verse: Matthew 3:13-17
16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.
17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
Jesus was baptized at the Jordan river. Baptism symbolizes the death and resurrection. And what pleased God so much that His voice thundered from heaven? It was Jesus obedience to die and be resurrected
Jordan means to descend. To descend or be lowered is always undesirable. But rewards of this action reaps a harvest of souls.... a double portion. Here is Paul reveling in his double portion
Verse: Galatians 2:20
20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
When Christ lives in you
Conclusion
Does God wants to give you the double portion? In fact God wants to give you so much more (Matthew 7:11). All we need to do is persist in our journey with the following formula
- Ask
- Seek
- Knock
Verse: Matthew 7:7-11
7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
9 “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?
10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?
11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
