Salt of the World

Verse: Matthew 5:13

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.

The Christians are the salt of the world. Salt is a very important ingredient to most food we eat. And when used in the right proportion, it makes a world of difference

Salt Characteristics

We are going to look at some of the characteristics of Salt and connect it to the spiritual significance and how this influences the community around us

Salt as a Neutralizer

Salt is Sodium Chloride. Sodium and Chlorine by itself is harmful for life. But when it is brought together, it goes beyond being harmless.

Our human nature is evil. But the word of God neutralizes the harmful nature. People in our community see this difference and will be drawn to us and eventually see God.

Salt adds flavor

Salt of added for flavor. The flavor signifies purpose. Hence we can become purposeful in our life. This again becomes an influencer

Salt is white

White always signifies purity. We abstain for deeds that are harmful. People recognize good living and become curious. This curiosity should lead to God.

Salt as preservative

What should be preserved - Love of Christ and Love for Christ. So our hearts needs to be guarded. And the way to go is to constantly feed our minds with the Word of God.

Salt is cheap and freely available in nature

The gift of God is freely given to us. It will cost us nothing if we give out what we have received. In fact our lives will be enriched further if we share the good news we have received. We must freely give because we have freely received.

Salt is used for cleaning agent

Salt has been used for cleaning since old times. The significance is that we can influence the people around by our living. People will stope their lives of sin when they see God in us.

How will the world be influenced?

Our speech plays a vital role in how we can affect the world

Verse: Colossians 4:6

6 Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.

But it is not the speech that needs to be checked. Our hearts needs to be checked for our speech to be right

Verse: Ephesians 4:31

31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.

If our hearts are checked, then we don't become too salty. Too salty spiritually speaking is deceptive living where we condemn people and yet we ourselves live in sin and hypocrisy.

The only way to check this is make sure we source our saltiness from the Word of God. If the Word of God is not our source, we loose our saltiness and we become worse than useless. We are only fit to be discarded.

So let us be that salt and light of the world!!!
