Watchmen
Verse: Ezekiel 22:30
30 “I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one.
We enjoy God's gift of salvation because of Jesus died on the cross for us. Jesus stood in the gap and stopped the wrath of God. As Christians God is expecting us to stand in the gap and point people to Jesus to stop God's wrath. God is looking out for an interceding people
Verse: Isaiah 6:8
8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
Isaiah responded to this call. There are several people who responded to the call.
- Abraham for Lot (and Sodom and Gomorrah)
- Moses for the people of Israel
- Daniel for people in exile
How do we intercede?
Since intercession is a spiritual battle, our confrontation is also in the spiritual world. And our entry into this world is prayer.
Verse: Matthew 26:41
41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
The word "watch" would signify diligence or carefulness around prayer. We cannot afford to slack in prayer. If we slack, the wall of protection will break and we will responsible.
Verse: Ecclesiastes 10:8
8 Whoever digs a pit may fall into it; whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.
Esther could have slacked because she was queen. But Mordecai charged her that if the wall of protection is broken, the consequences will affect her as well. The consequences of a broken wall is dangerous.... where we may be bitten by a snake. We know that Haman came close to removing a whole nation for the world.
Believers form a hedge around the nation and we are accountable for the souls. Watchman should sacrifice their comforts and be diligent. Jesus went to the extent of sweating blood. How is our prayer life?
Why Intercede?
Intercession does the following
- Saves people.
- Empowers us
1. Saves People
Verse: Hebrews 7:25
Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
2. Empowers us
And because Jesus intercedes for us, he is at the right hand of God. God will also reward us for our intercession
Verse: Romans 8:34
34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
Conclusion and Hedgehog Analogy
This Hedgehog analogy is chosen because hedge means walls. So in speaking of watchmen and keeping our walls strong, please notice how the hedgehog does this. A hedgehog that feels threatened can roll into a tight ball. This is its defense.
What is our defense? We also need to roll in prayer ... pray in secret (Matthew 6:6). This kind of prayer is our defense. Let us take this seriously and intercede for our family, friends, colleagues, city, nation.
Please remember safety is the responsible of the watchmen. We are that watchmen and we will be held accountable for any slackness!!!
