Deuteronomy

Study Methodology: Verse by Verse

Verse: Acts 20:18-20

18 When they arrived, he said to them: “You know how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I came into the province of Asia.

19 I served the Lord with great humility and with tears and in the midst of severe testing by the plots of my Jewish opponents.

20 You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house.

Paul was diligent in teaching the word so much so that he taught the Word from house to house. And this is the approach he would have taken in teaching the Word.... he would have taught the Word verse by verse as he went from house to house.

So this is an encouragement to study the Word, verse by verse. And Jesus used one verse at a time, to thwart the Devil's temptation during the 40 day fast.

Why Study Deuteronomy?

And in our Study, we will go through the book of Deuteronomy as detailed as possible. Why study this book?
  1. Jesus referenced the book of Deuteronomy the most
  2. The prophetic books reference the book of Deuteronomy most
  3. The reformation that happened during the time of Josiah started the with discovery of the book of the Law. This may be a reference to book of Deuteronomy (2 Kings 22:8)

Background

This is the fifth book of the Pentateuch. Moses authored this book as a last instruction to the children of Israel before they were to take possession. So this book was a reaffirmation of the Law that the Lord had given at the Mt Sinai.

to love and obey God

Passage: Deuteronomy 1:1-8

1 These are the words Moses spoke to all Israel in the wilderness east of the Jordan—that is, in the Arabah—opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab.

Note: This is the land flowing with milk and honey. God has wonderful things in store for us

2 (It takes eleven days to go from Horeb to Kadesh Barnea by the Mount Seir road.)

Note: Kadesh Barnea was the place that the 10 spies that rebelled 40 years ago. God is bringing us back and God is a reconciling us to him

3 In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses proclaimed to the Israelites all that the Lord had commanded him concerning them.

Note: The fortieth year saw the last of the people who would not enter the promised land die. Among them were Miriam, Aaron and Moses. The year was a sad year because the last of the leaders from the previous generation had passed. But this sad year brought in a new year with a promise of possessing the land of milk and honey

4 This was after he had defeated Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, and at Edrei had defeated Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth.

Note: The Word of God came in Deuteronomy after a battle had been fought. Be encouraged with every situation of life. And life is hard and full of battles. But after the battle has been won, you will hear the Word of the Lord

5 East of the Jordan in the territory of Moab, Moses began to expound this law, saying:

6 The Lord our God said to us at Horeb, “You have stayed long enough at this mountain.

Note: The relation with the God became personal .... "Lord our God". This renewed relation began to bring exposition of the Law ... a new discovery of who God was. David went on to write that 'God you are my God'.

7 Break camp and advance into the hill country of the Amorites; go to all the neighboring peoples in the Arabah, in the mountains, in the western foothills, in the Negev and along the coast, to the land of the Canaanites and to Lebanon, as far as the great river, the Euphrates.

Note: God is giving a new direction as they entered the promised land. And where did God lead them to? This was the driest part of the promised land - Negev. Most people struggle to hear God's voice for specific instruction. The way to hear His voice is to first be sensitive to the written Word of God.

8 See, I have given you this land. Go in and take possession of the land the Lord swore he would give to your fathers—to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—and to their descendants after them.”

Note: God is blessing us with every spiritual blessing. But God is asking us to 'Go and take possession' .... urging us to take this journey to study God's word. This will bring a fruitfulness in our lives.
